Today’s Flyover People column as seen in The Emporia Gazette: TO BALDWIN CITY AND BEYOND It was two weeks before the 151st anniversary of statehood, but it felt like Kansas Day to me. Dave and I were in the car, white stripes slipping behind us as we drove eastbound. Ahhh. The blue sky, the open …

One of the tables at Feaster’s Bistro in Baldwin City.
Meatloaf
I often post food from Bobby D’s because it’s one of my favorite places to eat in town. The Wednesday evening special is the meatloaf dinner. Lots of good meatloaf under that roll. And the mashed potatoes – real and delicious.
Christmas greetings
Merry Christmas, everybody! Or Happy Hanukkah, Kwanza, Festivus, whatever! Everyone has freedom to celebrate as they wish – it’s a free country! And a free country is something we should definitely celebrate, so party on, my friends. Above are the Christmas hams cooked yesterday for Dave’s family gathering in Salina. The weather was great, the …
Kale chips
Several people had mentioned baked kale chips to me. So, when I found fresh kale (in December!) at the Emporia Farmers Market on Saturday, I thought I’d give them a try. These were really good! I coated them with olive oil, sprinkled on sea salt and then baked them at 350 for about 10 …
Bobby D’s
One evening last week, Dave and I enjoyed BBQ at Bobby D’s in downtown Emporia. I had pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. Health food. Dave’s rib tip dinner with cheesy potatoes and cole slaw.
A stop at the Blackbird
When we were in Topeka a week or so ago, Dave and I stopped at the Blackbird for afternoon refreshments. It’s near 10th and Gage. 4025 SW 10th Ave Topeka, KS 66604 Since it was Dave’s birthday, I had a piece of cake. Dave doesn’t really care for cake.
The Lobster
Cheddar bay biscuit Usually when we eat out, we try to go to locally-owned restaurants. But occasionally, we’ll hit a chain. Like we did for Dave’s birthday last week: Red Lobster in Topeka.
Pesto pizza
Bought some hydroponic basil (grown in St. John, Kansas) at the Fairlawn Dillon’s store in Topeka on Sunday. And picked up some pine nuts there, too. So tonight, I ground up some pesto for basil-tomato pizza. Yum. Our new oven has an oven light! It’s the little things that make me happy.
Dushanbe Teahouse
In Boulder, our favorite restaurant, both for atmosphere and food was the Dushanbe Teahouse. The teahouse was a gift to Boulder from its sister city, Dushanbe in Tajikistan. The place had an incredible international menu. I had the Indian Masala Dosa. It was fabulous. Dave enjoyed his paella. Dining room. Ceiling.
Wood Fashion Cafe
Wood Fashion Cafe – in the Wood Fashion Plaza, 157 N. 7th, Salina. On the way back from Boulder last month, Dave and I stopped at the Wood Fashion Cafe in Salina for lunch. It’s an artsy place serving local foods. Tin ceiling. Hey, where’s Ally’s Prairie Mustard? I figured she’d be on the list. …
