  1. When my aunt was around 15 years of age she met Amelia Earhart. Earhart was given a parade in Atchison because of her mounting fame. Ironically, the Amelia Earhart bridge which was under construction at the time of her disappearance was not named for her until perhaps the late 1980s when the Earhart festival was developed. Now the bridge will be history soon.

  2. When my dad was about 11 and his brother-my uncle was 8 Amelia took them up in her plane for their first plane ride. She flew them around Atchison down south to Leavenworth and up around St Joe and back to Atchison. That was a huge thing for them for their family had not much money so the hired hand of their father–My grandfather drove them in to east of Atchison( where the airport is now) Amelia’s family farm where she lived was there. They had a runway just along side the driveway that she flew her plane out on. Thought you might be interested in this Roger.—Sharm
