When I looked at the weather symbols on my computer this morning, it showed partly-cloudy for Emporia with a high of 74 degrees. So, I left, wearing short sleeves. I didn’t throw a jacket in the car, didn’t think I’d need one. It’s been in the 80s around here for a week or so.

My car thermometer said 71.

When I hit Marion County, it started raining and rained on me all the way to Great Bend.

As I drove west, the temperature cooled. By McPherson, it was 61, by Lyons 55, at Great Bend 53.

It was chilly and wet. I stopped and bought a sweatshirt.

The sky rained all the way back – or at least to Marion/Chase County line. Heavy rain at times. With rain filling the low tracks in the highway, I had to slow down so the car wouldn’t hydroplane.

Home again. It was 71 degrees when I got back to Emporia. Eighteen degrees difference in 143 miles.

And it’s raining here now.

A break in the clouds.

  1. I got home just before the rain, but I loved the cloud cover all the way from Coffeyville to Emporia. It was gorgeous and the temperature was perfect for driving with the windows open.
