This morning, local attorney (and well-dressed man) Mark Sherman purchased a smiley-face-on-a-stick at the Great American Market in downtown Emporia.

“I’m protesting unhappiness,” he told me.

“The sign cost me fifty cents and I’ve already gotten a dollar’s worth of fun out of it,” Mark grinned.

It seemed to be working. Everyone smiled at him as he walked down the street with his sign. I walked with him for a few blocks and felt the radiant happiness fall upon me.

He lent it to Lara Cotte, tattoo artist and roller derby girl, so she could zip around Commercial Street with it.

Off she went, spreading smiles with the speed of skates.
