St. Joseph’s school in Olpe was the scene of the annual fall festival. It’s a big deal in Olpe, a huge fundraiser for the school.

I met five friends/acquaintances there this afternoon. Dan Markowitz was the Olpeite leader of our pack, the one who knows everybody in town and is related to half of them. We arrived at the right time. When we hit the school basement around 4:20 or so, the line wasn’t long, only about 40 people ahead of us. When we left the line was up the stairs and out the door and down the sidewalk.

Dessert selection was difficult. Everything looked good. I went with a nice coconut meringue pie (not pictured.)

They serve the basics – and then other side dishes are placed on the table and served family style: jello, sweet potatoes, rolls, the best homemade pickles ever, sauerkraut (no), dressing and cranberry salad. Fantastic meal.

The meal is served in the basement of the school. Dozens of volunteers do their part year after year.

The front yard was full of games and players.

It was a quiet evening, cool, but not even a breeze to rattle the trees.

Olpe, Kansas was founded by folks from Olpe, Germany.

St. Joseph’s Church is beautiful.
