Tonight one of our favorite people – Eleanor Browning – was honored as one of seven Kansas Master Teachers.  It was certainly no surprise when her name was announced a month or so ago – because if you’ve ever heard her talk about teaching, you know how much she loves those kids.

Ele is a Special Education Reading Coach here at USD 253, Emporia. She hails from Woodbine (Dickinson County) and started her teaching career in 1964 in Hope, Kansas.

Table centerpiece.

Emporia State University hosted the ceremony and dinner this evening, a very nice event. Governor Mark Parkinson attended and spoke briefly.

Ele had told me beforehand that if I had a moment with the Gov. that I should convince him to run for reelection (or, is that election, since he was promoted from being Lt. Gov.?) Anyway, Ele herself, during her remarks, urged him to run. (Ele is so political – she’s always fighting for education, fighting for those kids. Yay, Ele!)

Congratulations to the seven Master Teachers: Eleanor Browning (Emporia), Kathy Doussa (Dodge City), Michael Dunlap (Blue Valley), Lou Ann Getz (Manhattan/Ogden), Sheila Lewis (Shawnee Heights), Andrea Sayler-Siefkes (St. John/Hudson), Kassie Shook (Lawrence).

P.S. Andrea Sayler-Siefkes has Pawnee Rock connections. Her mother went to Pawnee Rock H.S. and I knew Andrea’s grandparents, so it was nice to meet Andrea.

  1. Spring arrived in time for FOP ele, on her big day. What more could we ask? Congratulations, now that it is OFFICIAL. You ARE and have always been a MASTER TEACHER and I am proud of you and glad I know you, Mrs. Browning.

  2. Thank you! I appreciate your kind words; I was fortunate to have great parents and a wonderful family and lots of help (prodding?) and I do love kids & teaching–well, people, too, especially flyoverpeople! It was so perfect to have Dave & Cheryl there. Cheryl, bless her heart, even went out to my jeep to retrieve my nametag that I’d left there! It was a good day, but I’m a little glad it’s over. 🙂 Thank you Elizabeth! You’re pretty sweet yourself! (and, Roger…you don’t need to call me ‘Mrs. Browning!’) 🙂

  3. CONGRATULATIONS ROWE GARRETT SAID HE WAS THERE. WOODBINE IS PROUD OF YOU. I DIDN’T REALIZE MY GIRLS HAD THE BEST TEACHER IN THE COUNTRY. BRIGITTE AND I WISH YOU THE BEST.
