Several people have suggested that I should’ve posted an obvious link to my KTWU appearance/video. I can only do self-promotion so far before I start to gag, but OK, in case you missed it, here’s my commentaryThe Sound of Sandwhich aired on the pilot for “I’ve Got Issues”  last Thursday evening.

Another piece on that pilot was Ron Frank’s video of the Whiting Cafe makeover. It’s fantastic and you should see it.

And here are Marci Penner and WenDee LaPlant talking with KTWU’s Eugene Williams about small town survival: Rural Communities.

So, now KTWU will be looking for underwriters for the new program and if all goes well, the series will be on the air in a year or so.

Meanwhile, be sure to watch “Sunflower Journeys” each Thursday evening at 7 p.m. on Channel 11  in this area of Kansas. (In other parts of the state, it might be on at a different time on your public television station.)

This summer, KTWU is featuring “Sunflower Journeys – Explorer” in which Marci Penner of the Kansas Sampler Foundation introduces previously-aired segments which focus on exploring Kansas.

  1. I understand your ‘gag’ response, Cheryl.

However, the other way to look at it is as just sharing things you’ve been doing or are interested in. No different than any of us talking about our wood carving, new dolls, tours of the town, new restaurant finds or recent photos. Sharing these events is one of the several things that makes this site so interesting and fun to be a part of!!!

  2. Onnalee, do you mean you missed Cheryl’s video? She’s got the link up there. First paragraph “The Sound of Sand.”

She looks great and sounds great. Her voice is perfect for such a thing. And she fits her voice perfectly. The whole thing, herself, her voice, the words, all fit together perfectly and beautifully.

  3. Thanks for posting that video. It reminded me of growing up in Woodbine. You could hear screen doors slamming, a car when it went by, a dog barking, the birds singing, kids playing . . . all the sounds that go unnoticed in urban areas, as they are indeed so noisy the sounds all blend together.

Ah, the blessed quiet of a small town . . .where you can hear the sound of sand.

  4. Hey–come back to Kansas!! In Woodbine, things have not changed much, except our dad has made a birdbath out of an old satellite dish and attached it to the rose trellis. So now we have something else to watch when we’re sitting on the east porch –and just once in a while, a car or pickup drives by. 🙂

  5. Cheryl, The Sound of Sand is a wonderful video, helping us to slow down a little and focus on what’s really important. I enjoy tremendously reading or hearing your stories and descriptions of Kansas. Though I’m 1500 miles away, sometimes I feel I’m there. Keep up the good work.

  6. I had meant that I missed the program. But then, I couldn’t get the video either, so e-mailed my computer tutor and she told me what to do. So . . . . I have seen it and that was such a touching moment to watch Cheryl on the video. Vonderful! Vonderful! (as Lawrence used to say.) We are all so proud of Cheryl and it is such a thrill to see her more recognized.
