Poetry was the topic for the “On the Porch” series at the William Allen White House this afternoon.

Here’s Liz Martell reading some of her work.

Prolific writer Antonia Felix read several of her poems. Some of Antonia’s (many) non-fiction books include biographies of Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush, Wesley Clark.

Dave took photos of the event also. Here’s one of Kevin Rabas, poet and musician, playing the drum before the program began. And one of me reading.

Max McCoy will present next week’s program: The program at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 features Max McCoy, instructor of journalism at ESU, who will cover the topic of investigative journalism. White’s career began during the era of “yellow” journalism. He was a forerunner of modern journalism standards which clearly separated news from editorials. (from the Gazette.)

  1. Cheryl,

I was so happy you stepped forward to share today. As I listened to you read, your style which is familiar through you columns came through in your poetry. Poetry uses an economy of words but, like in you columns, with your turn-of-words you created mind pictures that were sympathetic to the land you love.

The program was a balanced diet of poetry with diverse inspiration, length and form. It was a glorious afternoon on the porch immersed in words assigned by the authors for the intended meaning.

    The weather was good too.
