September “Readings on the Porch” ends Wednesday with the

toward science in the first half of the 20th century.

The event, which begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the William Allen White State Historic Site, 927 Exchange St., is free. Donations in support of the historic site are appreciated.

The event is coordinated by the William Allen White Community Partnership, Inc. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair.

Yesterday on the way to Hartford, Dave wanted to take a photo, so we pulled off the road. He couldn't get the shot he wanted ... and there were some big, ferocious-looking dogs running the fence line on the other side of the thin wire wall.

"At least the dogs weren't barking," I said, as Dave got back in the car.

"That's because they probably had somebody else stuck in their throats," he said.

Katie Schultz, Robyn Verner

Reading "Uncle Walt's" poetry.

In celebration of Emporia's poet Walt Mason, Katie Schultz and Robyn Verner read and act out Mason's prose poems tonight on the porch at the William Allen White Home.

Both women are members of the ESU Educational Theatre Company. Katie Schultz, left, is a junior from Hesston. Robyn Verner, right, is a junior from Wichita.

Roger Heineken presented the fascinating story of Walt Mason's transformation - from a washed-up alcoholic with a trail of debt to a world-famous poet.

"He was almost a rock star of his day," Heineken said.

Walt Mason became widely-known for his prose poetry in the early 1900s when he worked with William Allen White at The Emporia Gazette.

This evening's event was the second in a series of September "Readings on the Porch."

Next Wednesday's topic: Evolution, Science,

William Allen White and Society.

Facilitators: Harvey Foyle and Sam Dicks

Wed. Sept. 27, 7 p.m.

927 Exchange St., Emporia, Kansas

Admission is free; donations to the WAW Historical site

are appreciated.

I'll bet that the city of Lenexa is grateful this Attack of the Deadly Spinach incident occurred after their 33rd Annual Spinach Festival

(Sept. 9).

Lenexa, a suburb of Kansas City, seems like an unlikely place for spinach farmers. However, in the 1930s, Lenexa was hailed as the Spinach Capital of the World. Of the World!

It's a sad week in produce aisles all across the country: Vitamin K is being tossed in the dumpster.

I found this amusing...

Addled Writer:

"John Mark Karr says he killed Steve Irwin!"

and this entry about the blob

and this entry about Weeks We Should Get Off Work.

Caren Lissner is Addled Writer - and my new favorite author. This summer I read her novel, "Carrie Pilby" and just loved it.

Smart, clever writing.

The novel is about a 19-year-old introverted genius, navigating her way, with the help of a therapist, into a social life. Finding herself in dilemmas, Carrie Pilby discovers that morality is not as

cut-and-dried as she had once believed it to be.

A few of my many favorite lines from the book:

"Why is it that if you've never smoked pot, you make a great presidential candidate, but if you've smoked it just once, it looks bad. Why is there such a difference between one and zero?"

"I'm not going to have parties anymore. It attracts the wrong people. It attracts people who like parties."

"If I had any friends, I might actually tell them about this."

"Maybe it really is Satan. Isn't it funny that that's the answer that makes the most sense? My God, the religious nuts are right. Everything bad is caused by Satan. That's silly, of course. ... "

For me, the mark of a great novel is if the characters stick with you after the book is done -- if you miss them.

I miss Carrie Pilby.

If you appreciate good writing and want a fun read - buy the book.

It's raining. In a drought, this is a good thing. During an annual outdoor flea market sprawled up and down Commercial Street, rain is not such a good thing.

And no matter how the story reads in Monday's paper, spirits were dampened today. There were empty spaces of the no-show vendors --those who had paper goods, etc.

The Elvis dude had a booth - and a big Elvis with guitar tattoo on his bicep. The Tupperware booth seemed to be handling the moisture OK.

"I'm from South Carolina," he said and told me the college was in Rock Hill, S.C., and that it used to be an all-girls school.

"You might think it's closed by how it looks on the outside, but go on in. Edna's is the home of the Big Mama half-pound burger, and if you like finding the best burgers in the state, you've got to stop here."

Well, actually, Edna's was closed when we were there - a sign taped on the door said Edna's was closed

The Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon is on this morning. I usually catch a little bit of it every year - just because it brings back memories of some high school friends.

In Pawnee Rock we didn't get the TV channel it was on, so the first time I saw the MDA telethon was during my senior year.

I had been swimming on Labor Day at Barton County Lake with my friend Marilyn from Pawnee Rock and Lisa and Lana from Larned.

The four of us stopped at Lana's dad's house in Great Bend and the telethon was on.

"We have to watch the ending," Lana said. "He cries every year when he sings that last song."

We raided Lana's dad's refrigerator and ate balogna sandwiches in the darkened den and watched the ending of the telethon.

Jerry Lewis sang "You'll Never Walk Alone." It was a song I knew from Girls State, Girl Scouts or church camp or somewhere.

His voice quivered and broke. Jerry wept.

In present-day telethons, Jerry plays a minor role - maybe he only appears to sing that song and close the show.

Last year Jerry didn't seem like he was into the song. He appeared distracted and he goofed up the lines.
