Cheryl's Link of the Day Puzzled?
September 24, 2006 Sunday
Yesterday on the way to Hartford, Dave wanted to take a photo, so we pulled off the road. He couldn't get the shot he wanted ... and there were some big, ferocious-looking dogs running the fence line on the other side of the thin wire wall. "At least the dogs weren't barking," I said, as Dave got back in the car. "That's because they probably had somebody else stuck in their throats," he said. ***

I'll bet that the city of Lenexa is grateful this Attack of the Deadly Spinach incident occurred after their 33rd Annual Spinach Festival (Sept. 9). Lenexa, a suburb of Kansas City, seems like an unlikely place for spinach farmers. However, in the 1930s, Lenexa was hailed as the Spinach Capital of the World. Of the World! It's a sad week in produce aisles all across the country: Vitamin K is being tossed in the dumpster. And just how are we going to clot our blood now?

Caren Lissner is Addled Writer - and my new favorite author. This summer I read her novel, "Carrie Pilby" and just loved it. Smart, clever writing. The novel is about a 19-year-old introverted genius, navigating her way, with the help of a therapist, into a social life. Finding herself in dilemmas, Carrie Pilby discovers that morality is not as cut-and-dried as she had once believed it to be. A few of my many favorite lines from the book: "Why is it that if you've never smoked pot, you make a great presidential candidate, but if you've smoked it just once, it looks bad. Why is there such a difference between one and zero?" "I'm not going to have parties anymore. It attracts the wrong people. It attracts people who like parties." "If I had any friends, I might actually tell them about this." "Maybe it really is Satan. Isn't it funny that that's the answer that makes the most sense? My God, the religious nuts are right. Everything bad is caused by Satan. That's silly, of course. ... " For me, the mark of a great novel is if the characters stick with you after the book is done -- if you miss them. I miss Carrie Pilby. If you appreciate good writing and want a fun read - buy the book.

Kansas Public Radio now offers KPR-2 with different programming than KPR-1. KPR-2 is a High-Definition station, but you can listen online even if you don't have an HD radio.
The other big KPR news - besides the fact that today is their 54th anniversary - is that Kansas Public Radio has just been named non-commercial Station of the Year by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

Yesterday was a day of remembering tragedies and so as I approached milepost 116 on the turnpike, I pulled over for these photos. Flea Market Update: OK, early this morning it was rainy and cold and icky. But the weather improved as the day progressed.
*** It's raining. In a drought, this is a good thing. During an annual outdoor flea market sprawled up and down Commercial Street, rain is not such a good thing. And no matter how the story reads in Monday's paper, spirits were dampened today. There were empty spaces of the no-show vendors --those who had paper goods, etc. The Elvis dude had a booth - and a big Elvis with guitar tattoo on his bicep. The Tupperware booth seemed to be handling the moisture OK. A man stopped and asked me, "Where'd you get that shirt?" "South Carolina," I said. Because it was chilly out, I had put on my double-layered, reversible, maroon and gold, "Winthrop College" T-shirt. "Where are you from?" he asked in a southern drawl. "Here," I said in my prairie drawl. "I bought the shirt when I was down there visiting." "I'm from South Carolina," he said and told me the college was in Rock Hill, S.C., and that it used to be an all-girls school. I've been wearing this shirt for 15 years and people have asked me where Winthrop College is. This man is the only person I've run across who didn't need to ask that question. ***

Cheryl's Link of the Day: Garrison Keillor's joke machine pretty good jokes ...and some bad ones
Good morning, boys and girls. It's still dark here in the heartland, but then it's only 6:15 a.m. The sun is lingering in Tennessee or maybe or it got caught for speeding in Missouri. Anyway, it's not here yet. The days aren't as hot as a month ago, the nights are getting cooler, the grasses and sunflowers are turning the countryside yeller. Everyday is a bit more yeller than the last. (It's getting pretty noisy out there.)

Cheryl's Link of the Day: Keith Stokes' Kansas Travel and Tourism *** Around the town The Afternoon Perspective: Gas prices continue to drop. $2.39 at last check. ~ Several more plastic posts have been added to the Eastside Memorial Park playground set-up, but not enough to warrant another photograph. ~ Emporia State Bank has put up its new sign. In this world of changing bank names, they didn't change hands, yet they still chose to change their name. They've opened a branch office in Manhattan and perhaps they thought Manhattanites couldn't deal with something called "Emporia State Bank and Trust." So anyway, they changed their name to "ESB Financial." Seems kinda silly to me, but hey, it's not my bank. ~ Fewer vendors are at the Farmers Market these waning days of summer. Apparently we're in between peach and apple season because Bob Karr, the peach and apple guy, wasn't there. I saw squash and cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, canteloupe, peppers, baked goods and jellies.
*** I didn't play football on this field, but I walked around playing a saxophone here. And I stood along these sidelines, talking with the chain gang, as I took photographs of the ballgames for the Larned Tiller and Toiler newspaper.

Cheryl's Link of the Day: "Ninth Rock from the Sun" Be sure to check out the Buzzwhack link on her post *** For the first time in about 20 years, I was in Macksville, the town where I attended high school. Except for an addition (a nice brick addition) and the elimination of the portable classrooms (English), the school campus looked pretty much the same. The place has been well taken care of.
Lotsa great new stuff from Dave this weekend: New Wallpapers, too
September 4, 2006 Monday Labor Day Cheryl's Link of the Day:
On Saturday, we ate at the Great Wall of China in Great Bend. My fortune: It's nice to be remembered, but it's far cheaper to be forgotten. Today, we ate at Shanghai Restaurant in Emporia. My fortune: There are big changes ahead for you.
*** Dave scooped me this morning on the Edna's Place photo. But, here's my (more colorful) interpretation of Edna's in Macksville:
Go Mustangs! *** Bumper Sticker: Labor Day - from the folks who brought you the weekend. *** The Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon is on this morning. I usually catch a little bit of it every year - just because it brings back memories of some high school friends. In Pawnee Rock we didn't get the TV channel it was on, so the first time I saw the MDA telethon was during my senior year. I had been swimming on Labor Day at Barton County Lake with my friend Marilyn from Pawnee Rock and Lisa and Lana from Larned. The four of us stopped at Lana's dad's house in Great Bend and the telethon was on. "We have to watch the ending," Lana said. "He cries every year when he sings that last song." We raided Lana's dad's refrigerator and ate balogna sandwiches in the darkened den and watched the ending of the telethon. Jerry Lewis sang "You'll Never Walk Alone." It was a song I knew from Girls State, Girl Scouts or church camp or somewhere. His voice quivered and broke. Jerry wept. In present-day telethons, Jerry plays a minor role - maybe he only appears to sing that song and close the show. Last year Jerry didn't seem like he was into the song. He appeared distracted and he goofed up the lines.

Just what the heck is going on? At the Kwik Shop at 12th and Merchant, the price of gas has dropped to $2.49! ***
Yesterday was blustery (yeah, I'm still freaked out over that). It was misting and raining and cold (mid-50's and I was wearing shorts) - and my dad and step-mom were left waiting in the parked car while Dave and I ran out and grabbed a few photos. My pictures were hurridly taken so I could get back into the warmth of my automobile.
September 2, 2006 Saturday
Cheryl's Link of the Day:
OK, what was with the freaky cold weather today? It's Labor Day Weekend for goodness sakes, not Veteran's Day. I left the house this morning wearing shorts and it felt a little cool, but it was still early. I seldom pay attention to the forecast in summer. I count on summer to be warm. By the time Dave and I stopped in McPherson for gas, it was raining and 60 degrees! In Macksville at 1 p.m. the bank time/temp sign read 52. Yikes! Cold. Wet. Autumn. Where did my sweet summer go?
September 1, 2006 Friday Cheryl's Link of the Day Jon Carroll on the demise of Pluto *** In the neighborhood tonight: A grandmother (she's not that old) follows behind a 2-year-old boy on a little scooter thing that he rides and pushes with his feet down the sidewalk. The neighbor girls haul limbs to their dad's truck. They take turns wearing "the blue glove." Meanwhile their dad uses a noisy powerwasher to peel paint from their house. Across the street, the man climbs a ladder to change bulbs in his you-can't-look-at-it-with-the-naked-eye-brighter-than-the-sun-three-halogen-bulb-deathray yardlight. The various college kids who live in the yellow house have gone home (or gone somewhere) for the Labor Day weekend. A guy who works at the post office rides by on his bicycle. Otherwise, traffic on our street is practically non-existent. Everyone leaves town on holiday weekends.
*** Today, birthday wishes go to my cousin Brenda Jones who lives in Great Bend.
