It’s the Little Brown Church in the Vale.

Vernon was a surprise. On previous trips to Neosho Falls, we had taken the other route into town, from US 54. This time we approached from the west, from US 75. And we found the pretty much non-existent town of Vernon.

There’s a house or two, as I remember, and the church and the old school building.

  1. The flatbed is parked in front of the school? At first I thought they were moving the school, but the proportions seemed out of whack. Looks like a sad old building. Did you meet any ghosts?

  2. Kansas is full of so many places like this. I love visiting them, but they do fill me with strange emotions. What do these do to you, dear Kansas native? Keep ’em coming.

If you’re ever in Gove County, go see Gove. Or Gem in Thomas County. Lots of ghosts over there.

  3. Tracy – the school building was being used by a farmer as implement storage. The trailer in front is probably just part of his equipment.

Expat – whoa, wouldn’t know where to start describing the emotions that run through one’s head when visiting these old towns. There’s a longing for what was… but we wouldn’t have those thoughts if the town were still intact. But there is a sadness. And an emptiness.

Re: Gove Co., I’ve been to Monument Rocks, but that was just on a swing up from Scott City as we passed through W. Kansas enroute to Colorado a couple years ago.

  4. Cheryl – That’s a beautiful little church. Can you tell if it is still in use? It would be such a shame if it were abandoned like the rest of the town.

  5. Been thru Vernon at least 10-12 times in the past 4-5 years.I have 6-7 pictures from there. It was a pleasant surprise the first time I saw it,but it left you feeling kind of sad that this little village had died.
