Kahola Creek carved out a new route a few yards away and in the former creek bed at Shepherd’s Valley, John Crisp (left) has hung a tire swing. A couple weeks ago, some of the kids took a ride.

And here’s Kahola Creek now, right nearby.

  1. That’s the best tire swing I’ve ever seen, from the looks of the pictures.

Is the bottom filled in with something? From the way the kids are sitting, it looks like the hole in the tire must be filled.

  2. Look at the joy on their faces! I want a tire swing like that in my back yard! I’d need four of them thought, my grandkids would fight over it.

  3. Hey, let ’em fight! LOL It’s part of the rights of passage. Easy for me to say since I only see mine once or twice a year for a few days and they’re on their good behavior.

  4. We make lots of things here at the farm out of recycled tires – I think I could teach a whole course on the subject of recycled tire projects. We drag the castaway tires out of fields, ditches, and use the old ones I replace on my vehicles. Folks give us their old tires when they buy new ones, too. We make kids’ tire swings, like this one, horse swings, raised beds, and Mexican pottery look-a-likes as potters for container gardening. I even have some tire planters that are made up to look like parrots and toucans for hanging plants.

The hole is NOT filled in, the kids seat themselves on one side and their feet are up against the other side. We put a small wood saucer in the whole if the children are really small – like 2-3 year olds. Otherwise, they seem to do just fine.

  5. A lot of youngsters tell us this is the best swing they were ever in! We use a specially cut tire bead on the support limb that allows for the swinging action, but allows the limb to grow without damage.

  6. Probably the most fun combination, are two children about the same size – around 7-9 years old that sit opposite each other, and can get that swing really spinning. The tire swing goes up and down like a normal playground swing and can get about 8 feet high off the ground on either end of the arcing swing, it also spins, and it can go round and round in a wide circle roughly 12-14 feet in diameter.

One person on the ground can grab the swing by the upper rubber ring and swing the occupants in a tight circle that causes the tire to almost stand vertical. It’s pretty cool!

I hear people say, “this is better than a carnival ride – and it’s a lot cheaper!”
