More than likely, that is a Mrs. Spider getting ready to lay her eggs. Remember Charlottes web? Orville, Zuckermans amazing pig! Tha’s what I think of when I see one of these spiders doing thier thing, always this time of year when you see them the most.
The other evening Larry cleared the little deck in back of spiderwebs so we could sit out there and enjoy. As we were sitting there, we noticed a lot of big spiders in the trees and wires out there. Was kinda cool. This must be a big spider year. I wonder why. Some years we have so few, some years so many.
This might give you a new perspective on spiders. Cheryl Hayashi is a 2007 MacArthur Fellow studying spider silks. Some pretty amazing little creatures.
The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout
Along came the rain and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again

I worked in the yard yesterday and found a multitude of spiders or various types and sizes. Two of the kind pictured were on the clothline, one on each line and there was still the one on the swingset. lots of tunneled webs in the rocks around the flowerbeds with spooky looking wolfish spiders in them too.
