Sacred Ditch
It seems like every time Dave and I drive past this spot, eastbound, it’s been too dark to stop.
West of Strong City about a mile, on the south side of U.S. 50, there’s a small bridge with a place to pull off. Down in the ditch, is a monument, a tall, black obelisk.
Often along the highways, there are monuments devoted to the Santa Fe Trail, put up by the D.A.R. or other groups, so I figured it was something along those lines.
On Friday, my mom and I stopped. It’s a family cemetery plot!

There’s the big family stone - Simmons - and five or six small ones. Poor little Willie and poor little Freddie had short lives - neither saw his second birthday.
