Remembering Washington

In Memorial Park in Winfield, just to the east of the Cowley County Courthouse, there’s a monument placed by the D.A.R., paying tribute to George Washington on the bicentennial of his birth. They planted a tree in his honor. (No, I don’t know what kind of tree, I didn’t pay attention.)

Out here in middle America, which wasn’t really settled until the 1880s, we’ve always thought highly of Pres. Washington and such, but you just don’t see many memorials like this stretching back in time, recognizing the early leaders of our nation.

  1. It looks like a replacement tree. A 76 year-old tree would have a larger girth.
