Opening Day

Today’s Flyover People column:

OPENING DAY

“Oh, he’s got asparagus,” a woman said excitedly.

A pickup truck crept through the crowded parking lot. The tailgate was down, revealing a shiny silver bucket, half-full of asparagus.

A trail of people followed the truck.

“I’m going to get the two things I came after today,” a woman said, “my asparagus and my spinach.”

The asparagus sold for $3 a bundle and all of it was in the hands of grinning customers a few minutes after the 8 a.m. bell sounded at the Emporia Farmers Market. Read the rest.

  2. Cheryl, you are just GOOD! Another wonderful, interesting, and well-written column!
…and someone bought MY asparagus! The spinach is never mine.

  3. I’m glad you post these things to remind me to check out the Farmer’s Market here. I keep forgetting.

I have a HUGE post-it reminding me to go this Saturday before our friend’s arrive in town.

  4. If we ever get up early enough on a Saturday, we’ll come on up. You always make it sound so enticing.

Isn’t there one this evening? What time does it begin?

  5. Oh, wait, it’s 5 pm, it’s in the article.

That’s an awkward time for me too. When we lived in Emporia, we used to go to the FM. I used to volunteer, put out the signs, carry the clip board, etc.

I’m glad it’s still alive and doing well.

  6. The 5:00 pm doesn’t start until June 18, Janet. Just didn’t want you to go and find an empty parking lot sometime.

    Great commentary, as usual, Cheryl.

  7. LOL, thank you Onnalee. That could get embarrassing if I was wandering around a parking lot, looking inside people’s cars, trying to buy stuff from them.
