Left behind

Stick your hand in here….

Don’t worry, none are warm and squishy.

In the barn at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, you can see - and feel - what’s been left behind on the land. Skulls, jaw bones, feathers, shells.

  1. See, englishbloke, we have more than spider creatures in Kansas. Our creatures leave things on the prairie so city folk can feel them. Generous, our Kansas creatures.

  2. My kids were laughing at me because I really had trouble sticking my hand in those dark boxes. Even with the sign promising it would be okay, I kept expecting something to get me!

  3. Are those big turtle shells? Cool!

  4. That one shell, upper right, is an armadillo shell.

  5. One big armadilla!

  6. But that looks like a big turtle shell behind it and a box turtle in front of it. Afew jaw bones of cows or buffalo, is that a birds nest on the sticks or is that a lacrosse net from early Indian days? What’s that curled up thingy next to the armadillo, between it and the dog skull?

  7. Oh and is this a scheduled tour or can you go on it anytime? I’d like to do that some time!
