Hickory Tree Restaurant

We had just eaten in Lindsborg, but just up the road in Smolan, there’s a restaurant, the Hickory Tree, located in the old school. This would be a fun place to try sometime.

It has limited hours: Friday and Saturday, 5-9. Sundays 11-2.

Found the following information here:

The old school building in Smolan, Ks, built in 1926, has been transformed into a restaurant that offers a unique dining experience. This building is like a museum and restaurant all into rolled into one.

Guests will be able to dine at tables located on the original basketball court where old school activities were played. The old style themed classrooms located on the 3rd floor are available on special reserve for private parties. Almost every wall located in the building is decorated with old school memorabilia from 1926 to the present date. A large portion of the items have been donated by Kansas schools and regular patrons.

The restaurant menu consists of slow, hickory smoked brisket, pork chops, pork ribs & chicken, along with homemade side dishes & desserts. Many say its the best smoked meats they have had.

The restaurant is open from 5pm - 9pm Friday & Saturday & 11am to 2pm on Sunday. Call us today to schedule catering for private parties & large corporate events. Find us at 3rd & Walnut (304 E. Walnut) in Smolan, KS. 785-668-2164.

  1. Oh yeh, I’m up for that one. When do we go? We can car pool from Emporia, reserve a room or just experience the dining room/gym. What a great, no -terrific idea for a school renovation!!! I’ll have to keep that one in mind for Garnett. One could probably even live in a couple of the rooms if they remodeled it into an apartment.

  2. My DD was out west in Oregon or Washington and her group stayed at an old school. It was a bed & breakfast maybe or a hotel. She said her room was an old classroom and still had the blackboards on the wall. The gym had stuffed chairs and couchs and was a “movie” room. I thought it sounded wonderful!

  3. Oh gosh, did we talk about this here? Or did I see it someplace else? Someone had bought an old school and was using it as an artist’s retreat. It was neat with the chalk boards still up and it still looked like a school room, with a bed. Then the artist’s set up whatever they needed, as I recall. Writers could have a desk with whatever, painters an easel, sewers a sewing machine and table. Whatever they needed, as I recall.

If I find it again, I’ll post the link.
