good luck
If you’re coming to Emporia, good luck.
Now coming to Emporia on K-99, from the north or the south, no problem. Coming to Emporia from the east on I-35/US50, no problem.
Approach Emporia from the west on US50 or travel to Emporia via the Kansas Turnpike, yes, a problem.
Entering onto the turnpike from the west… hahahahaha.
Holy moly, those roads and detours are a glopped up mess. What a tangle of traffic, a wonder (not in a good way) of one-lane roads.
Anyway, should you be coming to Emporia from the west, if you want to get ON the turnpike, you have to come into Emporia, go north on Industrial, past 12th, 15th, 18th and take a left on I-35, then merge with one-lane traffic. (BTW, that’s an extra six stoplights.)
Good luck.
Exiting the turnpike at Emporia is another knot. There’s really only one way out, but it’s also the only way out for a couple other highways. I don’t know how people find their way in the dark. Or people from out of town.
Soon, the road constructionists (or deconstructionists) will be yanking the nearby Graphic Arts bridge over I-35. Add another mess to the jumble.
Best best - if you’re coming to Emporia on the Kansas Turnpike from Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas City, exit at Admire (US 56) and take K-99 the 20 miles south to Emporia. You’ll save about a dollar in toll fees and perhaps a dollar’s worth of aggravation as well.

Thank you for the pertinent and valuable info. In August, I’ll be coming down from Jct.City and was planning to come in from the west on 50. I will now change the route and take 56 to 99 and come down thataway.
Thanks again for saving me from future frustration and the expenditure of any number of bad words.
bad words are free!
looking forward to meeting you, H-43. The sunflowers will likely be in full bloom.
Good suggestion, Cheryl! The Burlingame Road on the east side of town (which hooks up with Hwy 99) is also an alternative route when coming/going to Topeka, Lawrence and KC.
Eventually, I’ll need directions to wherever I need to be when I get to town;but whenever you decide on a meeting point we can take care of everything by email or PM. (:+)
Actually, you can save a few miles, Helianthus43, if, when coming from Council Grove going east, you turn off on the road to Bushong (whatever that’s called…..I’ve only been traveling that way for over 45 years….) and go through Americus, and then take the turn off to emporia by that gray church……(now, after reading this, maybe you should get directions from someone else) Next time I go home to Woodbine, I’ll try to look at the signs to see names of roads. I was just thinking that, if you go to Allen, you –oh, you could go that way!–Admire is the one on 99, that would take you way east!
