Yesterday, at Shepherd’s Valley near Americus, John Crisp told me they grow 35 types of fruits and vegetables. As each crop is harvested, the food is divided among the subscribers/shareholders. They provide weekly produce to about 50 families and another 40 or so purchase meat or eggs or other items on a regular basis.

The farm has 300 tomato plants in the ground, most of them are heirloom varieties. “Last year our shareholders received about 27 pounds of tomatoes per family,” Crisp said.

Three rows of okra (seven varieties) are growing. “These okra plants will get over my head before it’s all over in August,” he said. They raised about 500 pounds of okra last year. Okra comes in colors – not only green, but aslo white and a burgundy red.

“Okra – you either love it or you hate it,” Crisp said.

“Our shareholders are just now getting the green beans.” And the green beans also come in yellow, purple and red. Who knew?
