Sugarfoot & Peaches

Sugarfood & Peaches BBQ in Fort Scott, Kansas. Not exactly the south. But they have gumbo and Cajun boiled peanuts. There’s a white pig on the roof and a white dog in front of the left window (you can barely see him.) The dog is live. Don’t think the pig is.
When she lived in Georgia, [...]

Gas, Kansas

Last week, we drove through Gas (pop. 505) in Allen County. I wanted to see if Bonnie’s Corner Cafe was still there. Bonnie’s was the cover shot for Gary Gladstone’s 2003 book, “Passing Gas … and other towns along the American Highway.”
Gary Gladstone returned to Kansas a few years ago for another photograph for his [...]

Lunch in Beaumont

Dave had some sort of burger inside a tortilla. He took a bite from the onion ring before I had a chance to photograph the plate!
We stopped at Beaumont on a trip we made to South Central Kansas in mid-August.

I had a BLT. Very good.

Beaumont Cafe

The Beaumont Cafe is an active part of the Beaumont Hotel. Pilots fly in for lunch, landing on the grass runway just a block away. Planes taxi down the dirt street and park in a lot just south of the hotel.
It’s also a popular place for bikers to ride for breakfast or lunch on the [...]

BBQ Queens

The BBQ Queens gave a grilling demonstration at the Emporia Farmers Market today from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. I dropped in on them twice this morning to watch for awhile.
Karen Adler and Judith Fertig add humor to their show. Here they’re showing the audience Wave #1, should you become famous and need a repertoire [...]

Mexican Supper

This evening is the Mexican Supper, a fund-raising event for Sacred Heart School. It’s held at the Sacred Heart Parish Center. They made 8,500 tacos for the dinner. Most of the meals are to-go, but some people stay and eat.

Two deep-fried tacos, rice, chips and cheese. And a dessert and tea or water. I had [...]

Angler’s Seafood House

Yesterday in Lawrence, Tracy and her niece, Ashley, a KU student, and I were walking up Mass. Street looking for a place to eat lunch. There were a few restaurant employees on the sidewalk encouraging passersby to try this brand new seafood place that opened on Friday. So, OK, we all liked seafood and went [...]

Stockman’s Cafe

The Stockman’s Cafe in Cambridge (pop. 101). Cowley County.
Check out the Stockman’s Cafe blogspot - it’s almost like being there.
Apparently (see Prairie Air’s comment below), it’s just open for coffee and conversation, not food.

Food Fest

Going on until 8 p.m. tonight is the International Food Festival in the basement of the ESU Union. Dave and I just got back, tummies full of Korean food. It all was tempting though.

The Korean platter for $5.

The guys from Saudi Arabia.

Pesto!

Last night in an e-mail to the englishbloke, I mentioned I was fixing pesto and angel hair pasta for supper.
Simon came back with this:
like a pizza, only frenchier
Here’s a sunny summer delight, ladies: pesto on puff pastry! Top with tomato
slices, olive oil and mozzerella; bake for 20 minutes, then sprinkle fresh
herbs over the top - [...]

Road Food

My friend Jay, the Road Warrior, blogs about food on the Wichita-to Santa Fe-route.
“Out here, chicken IS the vegetarian option.”

Peking Express

Larry, Janet, Roger, April. I don’t know what Roger was describing here - I was off taking the photo.
A few Flyover friends met for lunch at the newly-opened Peking Express on E. 12th in Emporia today. And I forgot to take a photo of my meal! Well, the food was served on Styrofoam, so that [...]
