Leaves have drifted across the driveway, across the yard. Wind blows the neighbor’s sycamore leaves and they pile up here. Today, in the rain, they are soggy and damp, not blowing anywhere.
Autumn is the time that trees let go of their leaves.
I think of the things in my life that have served their purpose - [...]

This is an historic moment - the United States has elected Barack Obama, our first African-American President. Obama is half-black, half-white, half-Kansan. (His mother and grandparents come from the land of Kansas.)
The turnout of the electorate in Kansas and around the country was phenomenal.
As anticipated, more Kansans voted for John McCain than for Obama. Because [...]

I voted. And you should too, if you haven’t already done so.
After I marked my vote on the electronic ballot, I stared at it for several moments. I wanted to be positive that I put the X beside the name I intended to vote for. I even took a photo of my completed ballot for [...]

Milo trick-or-treats for milk.
My favorite costumes tonight: Dorothys (2, siblings) with braids, blue gingham jumpers, ruby slippers and Toto in a basket. And also one baby Jayhawk.

It’s time to play Mystery Birthday - Tues. Oct. 21.
Whose birthday could it be?
Could it be a recipient of the University Service Citation Award recognizing unique and significant service to Emporia State University?
Yup. This Friday, our dear Flyover Friend Roger Heineken will be honored at the 2008 Alumni Awards Banquet at the Memorial Union (where [...]

Tiger hates going to the vet.
She sits on the counter at the vet’s office. She’s safe from doggies up there.
Free range kitty. The assistant put some treats out for Tiger in the exam room, but Tiger just steps right over them.
Tiger tries to hide. “You can’t see me.”
She found a cat-sized hideout between the exam [...]

The financial world is in shambles. Today the Dow dropped 778 points. But, hey, gas prices around here are pretty sweet (relatively speaking - I never expect to see gas below $3/gallon again.)
To check on gas prices in your area, visit Gas Buddy (a permanent link over there on the right side of this page.)

On the floor inside the main entrance of the Kansas Union, you’ll find the evolution of the university mascot, the beloved Jayhawk. And yes, there is an Jayhawk evolution T-shirt.
They took a wrong turn in 1920, but quickly found their way back to something less realistic. Thank goodness. We are all about mythical birds, not [...]

This pewterish, grayish bridal gown has been in the store window of Calamity Jane’s in Lawrence for a couple of years now. Time to change the window dressing! This dress creeps me out.

Yesterday, while looking through a shoe box of photos to see if I had any pictures of Pawnee Rock ditches (didn’t), I came across other shots (like the one of me dorkily diving into a pile of leaves.)
This photo above is of a few of my Pawnee Rock friends and teammates at a junior high [...]

Today’s Flyover People column as seen in The Emporia Gazette:
Me, practicing the Mannix roll into a pile of leaves. Early ’70s.
DITCHED
When Rick Clawson, a former classmate from Pawnee Rock, contacted me recently, he and I discussed things we did for fun in our small town.
As kids, we played hide-and-seek after dark, rode [...]
