Who has seen the wind?

More wind turbines from the Elk River Wind Farm near Beaumont.

Waiting on the Sky

Today’s Flyover People column as seen in The Emporia Gazette.

Gray sky over Fraser Hall, K.U. Sept. 13.
WAITING ON THE SKY
John Mayer has a song called “Waiting on the World to Change.”
I spent the first two weeks of September waiting on the sky to change.
For a fortnight, we were stalked by nimbostratus clouds.
These are [...]

Wind, thy name is Kansas

Elk River Wind Farm near Beaumont.
I was so busy concentrating this morning on wrestling with words… beating, pounding, clubbing a column into shape that I totally forgot about posting a post.
So, finally, here’s a picture of wind city.

Stone Bridge

West and north of Latham is a cool stone bridge.

Summer Field

A field near Latham. Butler County.

Road Trip!

On Thursday, gas prices were down to $3.38 here in Emporia, so I said to Dave, how ’bout a road trip this weekend? And he said, yup. Then on Friday, gas prices went back up a bit, some places to $3.59. But on Saturday, we found it for $3.44.

So we sat down and looked at [...]

creek bed

Creek bed. Open range. Chase County.

Turbinated

Wind turbines along the Lincoln/Ellsworth county line, just north of I-70.
I’m not sure I even want to post these pictures. I didn’t mind seeing the turbines out by Spearville. Those didn’t affect me negatively.
But here, it felt like someone took a permanent red marker and scribbled across the Smoky Hills.

Still Rockin’

Teter Rock in Greenwood County.

Teter Rock

My friend, Jay, steps into the photo to give Teter Rock some scale.

A Day in the Hills

Today’s Flyover People column as published in The Emporia Gazette:

A DAY IN THE HILLS
We bounced over a cattle guard. The landscape looked as rumpled as an unmade bed.
Grass was still June-green. Western ironweed bloomed like nobody’s business, tall stalks of purple bundles.
Where else on earth is the landscape this simple and this peaceful?
On [...]

Open Range

Sometimes out on the open range in the Flint Hills, you’ll come across a calf standing in the road., You wait, and sooner or later they’ll get on their way. It’s not polite to say “moooo-ve.”

The Hills

The views were great on Sunday’s trip through the Flint Hills of Chase, Lyon and Greenwood Counties.

Ironweed was blooming in abundance. Here’s ironweed, as seen on Mike Haddock’s great Kansas wildflower site.

Say, is that… Martin Johnson?
Oh, maybe not. (Martin Johnson is dead.)

Sandra and Jay survey the land.

It’s not just grass out here - there are [...]

Horses

At Navarre, we saw a couple of pretty horses. We wanted to take photos of them back with the barns, but they came to the fence and were very friendly. See Dave’s photos.
