a brown kitten

Back in November of 2005, (scroll down to Nov. 4, 6 & 7), I asked “Why are there no brown cats?” Tracy Simmons responded with a photo, showing a cat they once had that had some brown fur. And apparently there are some brown cat breeds - such as the Havana Brown.
But still, you have [...]

VOTE…. or else

In Kansas, the last day to register to vote in this election is Monday, October 20.
The time for apathy is over. EVERYONE MUST VOTE!

you tell me

In next week’s column, I mention a piece of advice a boss gave me when I was in college. It was just common sense, everyday advice, but remembering her suggestion got me thinking about advice we might give to a 19-year-old.
Is there something you know now, that had you known at age 19, would’ve made [...]

you tell me

There’s always a chatter about the first sign of spring.
What, for you, dear readers, makes fall fall?
What are your autumn traditions?
What are your favorite aromas of the season?

Paw of the Tiger

Tiger Tales:

Not a lucky cat’s foot. This one is attached to a live cat.
Some of Tiger’s feet have all pink pads. This foot is more interesting. Ever notice how cats don’t like you to mess with their feet?

Tiger in one of her less gracious poses. But - see that dark spot on her hind leg? [...]

You tell me

I’m thinking, this morning, about starting an occasional series of posts - to get YOUR thoughts on Kansas.
I’m always yabbering on and on about what I see and like about Kansas, my memories, my experiences, but I’m only one person. And what do I know anyway?
So, let’s try this for fun, and see how it [...]

Helianthus stamps

Went to the Post Office this morning to mail a package and pick up a book of stamps. When the clerk asked what kind of stamps, I said, “Pretty ones, please.” And he brought out these. So I bought two books. It’s more fun to mail bills with pretty stamps and these sunflower ones are [...]

Sept. 24

Get ready.
Get set.
Punctuate!
National Punctuation Day.

Yikes

The more I watch on TV about Hurricane Ike, the more horrible it sounds. Officials have advised those who didn’t leave Galveston to write their Social Security numbers on their arms.
“All neighborhoods … and possibly entire coastal communities … will be inundated during the peak storm tide,” the weather service warned. “Persons not heeding evacuation [...]

New Cat in Town

We have a new used cat in the house.
We knew we’d be inheriting Dave’s late sister’s cat, but we figured it would be in six months, or a year, or whenever. But Dave’s brother delivered the cat yesterday. Surprise!
We’re adjusting. Tiger is adjusting. Snowball is kind of hissy, but adjusting. And we’re thinking of a [...]

In today’s mail

The other day, in an e-mail, I was telling fellow writer Ray Randolph that my fav-fav-favorite pens were stick Bics - but just not any Bics - they have to be Bics with advertising. (For some inexplicable reason, the ones with advertising have better ball points than white Bics you can buy in the store [...]

Summer haters…

… close your ears, or skip this post and take a moment to visit someone else’s blog.
Because - yay, the grass is green and trees have leaves! Did you realize that for only half of the year, half of our lives, trees have leaves?
From mid-October to mid-April, most trees in Kansas are leafless! Sigh.
We [...]

Guess What?

They painted the white parking lines at the post office!
Now this may not mean much to you, but… ya know, it doesn’t mean all that much to me either. I’m just making conversation here.
Mailed a couple of things at the Po-poppice (that’s what I used to call it when I was a kid -or the [...]

K-10

K-10 Highway.
If you’re going to Lawrence via the Kansas Turnpike, be advised that the west Lawrence exit is closed. You must take either the Lecompton/K-10 exit or the east Lawrence exit.
And - there are no signs along the road to tell you this in advance. I had a vague remembrance of it so I was [...]

KTA Interchange

I don’t remember how many years they’ve been working on this (it seems like forever), but construction continues at the junction of the Kansas Turnpike, I-35 and US 50.
The only way to get on or off the turnpike in Emporia now is via I-35.
Taking US 50 out of Emporia won’t get you there!

Heading toward the [...]
