Several people had mentioned baked kale chips to me. So, when I found fresh kale (in December!) at the Emporia Farmers Market on Saturday, I thought I’d give them a try. These were really good! I coated them with olive oil, sprinkled on sea salt and then baked them at 350 for about 10 [...]

One evening last week, Dave and I enjoyed BBQ at Bobby D’s in downtown Emporia. I had pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. Health food. Dave’s rib tip dinner with cheesy potatoes and cole slaw.

When we were in Topeka a week or so ago, Dave and I stopped at the Blackbird for afternoon refreshments. It’s near 10th and Gage. 4025 SW 10th Ave Topeka, KS 66604 Since it was Dave’s birthday, I had a piece of cake. Dave doesn’t really care for cake.

Cheddar bay biscuit Usually when we eat out, we try to go to locally-owned restaurants. But occasionally, we’ll hit a chain. Like we did for Dave’s birthday last week: Red Lobster in Topeka.

Bought some hydroponic basil (grown in St. John, Kansas) at the Fairlawn Dillon’s store in Topeka on Sunday. And picked up some pine nuts there, too. So tonight, I ground up some pesto for basil-tomato pizza. Yum. Our new oven has an oven light! It’s the little things that make me happy.

In Boulder, our favorite restaurant, both for atmosphere and food was the Dushanbe Teahouse. The teahouse was a gift to Boulder from its sister city, Dushanbe in Tajikistan. The place had an incredible international menu. I had the Indian Masala Dosa. It was fabulous. Dave enjoyed his paella. Dining room. Ceiling.

Wood Fashion Cafe – in the Wood Fashion Plaza, 157 N. 7th, Salina. On the way back from Boulder last month, Dave and I stopped at the Wood Fashion Cafe in Salina for lunch. It’s an artsy place serving local foods. Tin ceiling. Hey, where’s Ally’s Prairie Mustard? I figured she’d be on the list. [...]

My mom and Dave and I ate dinner at the Hays House in Council Grove on Sunday. My trip through the salad bar. This was a very good meal. Great fried chicken, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh green beans and homemade roll with butter. Excellent.

I loved the grilled salmon salad at the Lazy Dog Sports Bar along Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado. Loved it so much that we went back a second time. There was an upper deck, but the first time we sat outside at their sidewalk tables – ’cause you can’t dine al fresco in downtown Emporia. [...]

Today’s Flyover People column as seen in The Emporia Gazette: A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE As we approached Pueblo, Colorado, I pictured all of the stress of the past few months as a ball of pink yarn. One end of that imaginary ball of yarn I left in Emporia, and I could visualize a thin pink [...]

On the way to Colorado earlier this month, Dave and I stopped for dinner at the famous Pho Hoa One in Garden City. This restaurant was in the top 24 of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine contest sponsored by the Kansas Sampler Foundation. It’s in a nondescript building off of a parking lot, at [...]
