Karen’s Kitchen

August 20th, 2011 at 11:37 am

Last Saturday when I was in Newton for a book reading/signing, friend and fellow author Beverley Buller took me out to lunch at Karen’s Kitchen. It’s more than a restaurant, it’s a coffee shop, a hang-out place. The blackboard has a list of upcoming musical guests I had the black bean wrap and it was [...]

Toot’s

May 29th, 2011 at 7:03 pm

Dave and I were southbound today and our hungriness kicked in right before Howard, the county seat of Elk County. So, we stopped at Toot’s Drive-In. Dave had a double hamburger and fries. I haven’t had a burger since March, but had one today. It was a satisfying meal.

Today’s Flyover People column as seen in The Emporia Gazette: ALONG THE WAY One of the reasons people take road trips is to see what’s going on in the rest of the world. Most of us desire, crave, new scenery. For those of us who live, work and spend most of our time in one [...]

T-Rex

November 3rd, 2010 at 6:29 pm

This T-Rex scared the snot out of me. I was alone on the path in the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays and this guy came to life. I knew I had triggered some sort of sensor a minute earlier when the screeching of birds began, but I didn’t expect the T-Rex to come [...]

Today’s Flyover People column as seen in The Emporia Gazette: ALONG INTERSTATE 70 Walter P. Chrysler was a man from small-town Kansas who made it to the big time. He built cars in Michigan and he built a sleek skyscraper in the heart of New York City. On my recent trip to western Kansas, I [...]

Spanakopita

November 1st, 2010 at 9:18 pm

In Lawrence today, I ate at Mad Greek and had my usual, spanakopita, or spinach triangles. Mad Greek is not consistent; sometimes it’s really good, sometimes, just OK. Today, the triangles were on the soggy side, not great. But even soggy, they were better than the Mediterranean food I get in Emporia (because there are [...]
