Hammerpress

February 16th, 2010 at 6:11 am

We drove past this place on Saturday, but didn’t stop.  Once, a few years ago, Dave and I were wandering around Kansas City, MO. on foot and we went in Hammerpress – a letterpress and design studio. They have some really great stuff here. But then, I love paper and stationery (not that I ever [...]

Wild Oats

February 14th, 2010 at 2:43 pm

This is a classic, neighborhood natural foods store, small and cramped and organicky. It’s at Main and, I think, 43rd Street.

Milk in a bottle

February 11th, 2010 at 6:24 am

Heather Lake mentioned the other day that Reeble’s is now selling milk in a glass bottle from Hildebrand Farms Dairy near Junction City. Yesterday when I was in Reeble’s I thought I’d check it out. I’m not a milk drinker – at all – but thought I’d try out the chocolate.
It’s good. Very good. And [...]

The Chandelier Shop on W. Sixth in Emporia is closing their showroom. We have a nice lamp that we bought here several years ago.

Lola’s

January 28th, 2010 at 6:12 am

On Sunday, I stopped in at Lola’s in Topeka to meet Kris, an online friend. Fun stuff, meeting strangers that you’re sure you’re going to like in person.

It’s a pleasant coffee house at 10th and Gage in Topeka.

I had one of the best sandwiches ever. It was, I think, a Dilly Beef – with cream [...]

Sidewalk scene

January 18th, 2010 at 7:19 am

Downtown Emporia. The Celebrate Emporia banners are up a little late this year. Usually they go up on the winter solstice, but probably due to snow or budgets or busyness, the city didn’t get them up until just the last week or so.
Nikki B’s is an embroidery shop where they embroider logos and things on [...]

Graves Drug Store

January 17th, 2010 at 9:06 am

When I moved to Emporia, I thought Graves was an odd name for a pharmacy. (Don’t know how its name came to be.)
And, in Council Grove, I was always struck by the name Coffin Insurance (founded by George Coffin in 1895, now called Holmes Insurance.)

Studio C

January 11th, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Clarine Knapp owns Studio C at 317 Commercial in downtown Emporia. It’s a loft studio, so there are some stairs.
I went for a haircut today. This was my first time at Studio C.
Other than occasional trims, I hadn’t had a new on-purpose style since… 2003? That’s when I had spiked hair (!) and that’s when [...]
