When I was a youngster, we had grape hyacinths growing in the front yard, in front of the rose bush with tiny pink roses. My mom loved flowers and plants and we had an incredible back yard, which was a garden of green, full of shrubbery and flowers and some pretty good hideout places for a kid – behind the lilacs, behind the pussy willow.

So, I always think of home when I see grape hyacinths. They are really kid-friendly flowers, low to the ground, accessible, easy to pick and easy to dismantle, one purple glob at a time.

These pictured above are growing in the neighbor’s yard. We have some in our yard, too, but not as many.
