In my yard

April 10th, 2010 at 9:52 am

A month ago, the yard was drab. Now there are tulips. (We purchased these bulbs from the neighbor girls years ago – school fundraiser.)

The dogwood is very happy these days.

Cheery dandelions.

The lilac was dead, consumed by bore worms (or whatever they are) and we were going to replace it, but it grew back.

Grape hyacinths – a favorite of mine from childhood. This is actually in the neighbor’s yard, but close enough.

A cat – Zorro the Magnificent!

I pose for picture, ‘k?

Henbit. Now see, if we had a “proper” and manicured lawn, we wouldn’t have henbit. And I love henbit, another flower with wonderful childhood memories.

And vinca vine.

More and different stuff in the backyard jungle. Perhaps I’ll take the camera back there and pretend to be Osa Johnson. I think there is a Tiger in the backyard.

I love grape hyacinth. I love Dandy Lions too. Larry has mowed around some wildflowers. And he’ll put off mowing by a day or so, so that we can enjoy the dandelions. Tulips were my mothers favorite flower, but she was never very successful with them. I’m thinking they might do better in the midwest where there’s freezes in the winter than in So. Calif.

We just got a new Dogwood with pickish flowers. That is the tree I got to memorialize my friend who recently passed on. I hope the tree lives. I’m not known for my green thumb.

I had changed my mind on planting a tree for her, but while we were looking at the nursery I ran across this dogwood tree at the nursery. And I got such a clear image of a memory that was tucked way back, of her smiling face as she told me about how much she loves dogwoods. That was 40 to 42 years ago that we had those conversations one Spring.

And here I am, all these years later planting a Dogwood in her memory. I was so young. She was so wise. LIttle did know that over 40 years hence I’d plant a tree in Kansas for her.

I’m doing it again, rambling on with whatever pops into my mind.

Janet, that is such a sweet story! It’s wonderful that she had you for a friend! –and, I love it when you “ramble!”

I love all your flowers, and I especially love Zorro with his “in your face” stuff. I’m ready for my closeup, Ms. Unruh…
