Graves Drug Store

When I moved to Emporia, I thought Graves was an odd name for a pharmacy. (Don’t know how its name came to be.)

And, in Council Grove, I was always struck by the name Coffin Insurance (founded by George Coffin in 1895, now called Holmes Insurance.)

Names of businesses, doctors, etc. are sometimes so interesting. The surgeon who did my hysterectomy was Dr. Cutner.

Can you imagine a beauty salon called “Fish House of Beauty”?

I knew an orthopedic surgeon by the name of Dr. Payne, and an OB-GYN named Bonebrake.

I really thought they should have traded specialities.

I had a student teacher named Mrs. Crabbe. One time one of my students called her “Mrs. Grouch,” and we had a laugh about that! She was definitely NOT a “crab” or a “grouch!”

Not to change the subject or anything – but my husband works at Graves every morning.

Saw a sign for a Dr once that was Dr Coffin. At the end of a very spooky hill in Linn county somewhere.

For many years, Dr. Butcher was the Lyon County Coroner.

Pretty good! And I kid you not, there was (and may still be) a dentist in North Carolina named Dr. Toothacher.

When you get a name like that, Weeta, you kind of have to be a dentist, don’t you?

I loved shopping at Graves as a kid. Haven’t been to downtown Emporia in ages.
There’s a dentist in Manhattan named Dr. Wisdom; I always thought that was funny since he’s probably extracted some wisdom teeth.
