Chestnut Charlie

Chestnut roasting today in front of Au Marche in downtown Lawrence. That’s Charlie and Debbie, peddling the chestnuts. Check out their website at www.chestnutcharlie.com.

They shared a sample, an organic roasted chestnut, with me and it was, indeed, delicious. Their chestnut orchard is outside of Lawrence.

Oh, they’re such cute, furry little things. Do they make little trilling, purring sounds when you pet them? Do they scream when you skin them?

Oh, I am so jealous! You got to go to Lawrence and I didn’t!

I have had Charlie’s Chestnuts, though. My friends in Jefferson County get them and serve them in this season and they are wonderful.

That is a gorgeous picture of the chestnuts in the basket. Well done.

how many chestnuts come in a pod? i see three in one and two in the other. or dose the size of the tree make a diffrence.or do they come from a tree. i have heard of them but never saw one. are they bigger than an acorn?

I didn’t look at the pods that closely, but yeah, each individual nut is about the size of an acorn – the big acorns. These folks have an orchard of chestnut trees.

Nice – I wonder if Jacob knew this was going on? He really likes living in Lawrence!

I’ve always wondered what roasted chestnuts taste like. Is that the only way to eat them? G:-)
