The Prairie Canaries opened for Nick Charles last night at Emporia’s Granada Theatre. From left: Derrick Dody on fiddle and mandolin; Ursula Davis, vocals; Josh Thuma on bass; Casey Cagle, vocals and guitar.

They did an outstanding job up there, a great performance.

And it was so cool to see Casey play onstage in the theatre that he spent years helping to restore.

Don’t forget that Casey will perform solo in the little Red Rocks amphitheater on the porch of the William Allen White House State Historic Site Sunday, September 27th at 2 PM. Sans Canaries, Casey will provide an intimate acoustic performance in the sheltered outdoor living room the Whites loved, as did their guests.

According to Beverley Buller’s book “From Emporia: The Story of William Allen White,” the teen White, a self-taught keyboardist, earned his first income playing house dances in the 1880s. Casey and friends play barn dances.

How was the turnout for the event? With so many events going on lately, I was worried it would be low.

I’d say there might have been 100. A few were in the balcony but I never went up stairs.
