ruyi-asian-food

After I got home from my traveling day, Dave and I went out to eat at the new place in town: RuYi Asian Food in the 1100 block of Commercial. The Emporia Gazette had an article on the place this week.

My meal came in a bamboo box.

I don’t remember what my dish was called … lotus and shrimp is all I remember.

It was pretty good. Nice presentation.

Korean stone fried rice with beef (or something like that) was what Dave ordered. That’s a fried egg on top.

Thought I’d post tonight’s dinner, but stay tuned for more traveling pictures.

  1. Did they say it was a lotus leaf? It looks like an elephant ear leaf to me. I heard from a Phi Delt that they serve some items with mean little hot peppers that come in green, yellow-orange and red.

  2. The stone fried rice was really good, and great spicy red sauce comes with it. Because it comes in a heated stoneware bowl the dish stays hot. Shanghai is still my favorite, but I did enjoy my meal at RuYi.

  3. I could be wrong but lotus leaves are hairy on the underside and have pronounced ribs. The topside has a fine sharkskin-type texture which resits water.

  4. Elephant ear leaf is poisonous. Even taro leaves have to be prepared a certain way to avoid toxins that cause your throat to itch. Lotus leaves are prepared too. They’re not going to serve them with hair.

  5. Interesting info, Vic. Communication with the waitress was somewhat difficult, but will ask more questions next time so I’ll know what I’m eating.

  6. The Korean dish is called Biminbop. Traditionally, the egg is given to you raw and you dump it over the dish yourself, the heat from the bowl cooks the egg. The spicy red sauce is a mixture of soy beans, and crushed chili peppers. Fiddlehead, carrots, water cress, cucumbers etc usually surround the egg. It is my FAVE korean dish.

  7. Joie Martin :I ate at this restaurant. I had shrimp in oyster sauce. It was pretty good although I couldn’t taste much oyster in the oyster sauce and that’s a taste I enjoy. Anyway, I’m going back soon and try something new. As my mom used to say, “I’ll eat anything that won’t eat me first.”

  8. I’m having cravings for another Biminbop. Thanks for the name and background about the dish Lacey. I love international foods, and the Ruyi Asian restaurant just made Emporia a lot more interesting for eating out.

  9. Remember Dave…I have a Korean Cooking Class at FHTC in April! Just a quick plug! We won’t be making Biminbop but many other tasty Korean treats are on the menu.
