Pewter bride

This pewterish, grayish bridal gown has been in the store window of Calamity Jane’s in Lawrence for a couple of years now. Time to change the window dressing! This dress creeps me out.
Maybe it’s for renewing your vows on your 25th (silver) anniversary? Or for a less than virginal bride? It is kinda weird. Wedding dresses in the past weren’t always white, though. A nice, new dress that a bride could wear for her wedding and then for a special occasion or church dress until it became old and faded enough to be relegated to everyday attire and replaced with a new dress was the most practical choice for the average bride of modest means. Do you remember the description of Laura Ingalls’ wedding dress? She actually had one planned and in the works when Almanzo asked her to move up the wedding date. She got married in her nice black dress instead! Women wear dresses less nowadays, especially long, fancy dresses that might do for a wedding gown.
Miss Havisham comes to mind.
You know what song always makes me think of Miss Havisham?
Delta Dawn, what’s that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by
And did I hear you say
He was meetin’ you here today
To take you to that mansion in the sky
Yes, that’s from memory. And now that lovely little earworm will be stuck in my head for days, all because of Heineken160′s comment about Miss Havisham. It’s a great song for belting out though. Maybe I’ll pass the earworm along, LOL.
Helen Reddy had the best version.
