Out in the country, between Lindsborg and Salina on Burma Road is the Salemsborg Lutheran Church.

Two doorways. Words over the south doorway (left) are in English. Words over the north doorway are in Swedish? German?

“A mighty fortress is our God.”

This church is a mighty fortress – standing huge – and strong against the prairie winds.

OK, does this doorway also say the “mighty fortress” thing? Or something different?

Update – Helianthus43 set me straight:

Not German…Swedish! (Lindsborg…Swedes)

The top says about the same thing the English says, with one addition.

Salemsborg Swedish Evengalical Lutheran Church

And right above the door, it says A Mighty Fortress Is Our God in, you guessed it, Swedish. (In German it’s Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott.)

And that’s the end of today’s lesson. Remember next class is the midterm final. Auf Wiedersehen (See you again).

  1. Now that is a church I’d like to go into. Look at the size of those windows! Can’t you just imagine all the light coming thru those stained galss panes! A wedding or a funeral in that church would truly be a moving experience.

  3. I knew I had to depend on someone bright for the answer.

    Thanks, Helianthus43!

You know, I’m so used thinking German in Kansas, but we were in Swede country last Sunday.

  4. I should have known that would be Swedish. My grandmother came from that area and was Luthern. I did wonder if she ever went to that church for anything. She was from Smolan.

  5. I’ll probably never get to Victoria to see the church building there, but I sure would like to see this one. Another item on my Kansas TO DO list.

  6. I want to see inside this church too. One day when I’m on my way West and going that general way.

I’ve been inside the one at Victoria, and it is magnificent. There’s another further East, and now I’ve forgotten the name. Very small town, very big church.

  7. I have visited this church and it is magnificent inside, as well. My wife, her mother and a sister graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg (Little Sweden). My mother-in-law grew up on a farm near Falun. She and her sister used to joke about being “Falun women”. 🙂

  8. I have inherited an 85th anniversary plate that honored your church. Would anyone in that area have an interest in it? Thank you so much.
