Admire

When returning from Lawrence the other day, I jumped off the turnpike at Admire (pop. 178) because … 1) the toll is less, 2) it’s not any further, mileage-wise, 3) it’s a chance to avoid the fruit-basket-upsettedness that is the Emporia Turnpike interchange during road construction.

This is the old high school – the other end – the newer part – of this building is used as an elementary school.

And the thing you should know about Admire, my out-of-county friends, is that it’s pronounced AD-mire. (And Reading is pronounced RED-ding.)

Well, there’s not much left of Admire. This is at the main intersection in the business district.

This is the business district.

And the post office which is to the right of the cafe.

Both Hubby & my families came from the Admire & Reading areas!
Hubby’s great grandparents had one of the first grocery stores in Admire “Bruce’s Grocery”!

Indiana has a town of about 500 named Advance..that’s ADvance. A few years ago, I counted 400 Indiana towns having less than 100 population.

I was searching through boxes from my grandparents’ house from Pampa, Texas. I came across information about Admire High School from the 1920s. My grandfather John Herman Jones taught there from 1925-1929. The information I have consist of his grade book and attendance records. He kept of his students. I found some high school commencement programs, too. I wonder if any of the old timers remember my grandfather. My grandmother was Bonnie Thelma Turcotte Jones. They both graduated from McPherson College during the 1920s. Bobby J. Jones

Well bjj1266, I’m a stranger here myself. I’ve only lived in Lyon County about 25 years, but maybe someone more familiar with the Admire area will respond.
