Flyover People Small Towns:

Kansas Stories at the Electric Cat Cafe

Saturday, April 2, 2005

April is full of Saturdays this year and The Electric Cat Cafe in Paxico has Kansas Stories scheduled for each one. On April 2, Dave and I trekked to Paxico in Wabaunsee County and spent a few hours in the town.

Each small Kansas community is different, of course.

We've been to a lot of them. But I don't know that I've felt as comfortable and welcomed in any of them as I did in Paxico.

Betty Wilson played the piano before the storytelling started.

The notes of the piano echoed off the cement floor and occasionally Betty stopped and started over. She sang and played songs like "Happy Days are Here Again" and "Home on the Range."

This is it. This is real life.

Linda Geffert and Janice Levering told and read stories about the Orphan Trains that came from the east coast from 1867-1930. "There are 5-6,000 stories that could be told about Kansas orphan train riders," Linda said.

Electric Cat Update from Linda Geffert:

Greetings all you friends of / and / or furry feliners out there!

Are you getting as excited as I am? October is one of the best months for cats - it's getting cooler, there's fuzzy little crawlies to chase, and then there's Halloween. It's enough to make you want to stand up on your hind legs and sing, "PurreowEOooo."

Activities abound at The Cat and Paxico in October. You won't want to miss a single one. Mark your calendars!

October 1st, 2:00 P.M. (Electric Cat Cafe) K-State Solar Racing Team and Car.
Three members of the solar racing team from K-State will present our Kansas Story on this first Saturday in October. They will have their car, Paragon, at The Cat for all to see. The team, one of 20 entries, completed the North American Solar Challenge this summer. They started in Austin on July 17th and finished July 27th in Calgary, Canada. Find out what work and research is being done at K-State on alternative fuel sources. How's this for a timely topic! And just wait until you see the car! Awesome!

October 8, Paxico Polka Pfest 10:00 A.M. through the afternoon.
Paxico's traditional festival just keeps getting better. For more information about setting up a booth or the Polka Pfest in general, contact Don or Myrna at Main Street Antiques, 785-636-5200.

Catto, the great feline thinker, ponders . . . "If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?"

October 15, Carol Cook presents the story of The Underground Railroad. 2:00 at The Electric Cat Cafe.
Carol is a teacher who is also extremely interested in Kansas history. She, along with Michael Stubbs, has conducted tours of the underground railroad in this area. We are thrilled and happy to welcome Carol as a presenter in our Kansas Stories series.

October 22 - Noon - Approximately 2:00 P.M. Bootleggers Dulcimer Group.
Mountain dulcimer music at it's finest. The Electric Cat Cafe.

October 29, 2:00, P.M. Halloween Party at The Cat. It's going to be oooohhh soooo scary!
Members of The Write Stuff writing group, will present a hair raising, spine tingling, warped -- but humorous, Halloween story, complete with sound effects. Linda Geffert will tell chilling tales of Kansas ghosts. Partake, if you dare, of the ghoulish refreshment tray which will feature spider cookies and Shicken Fingers, that's Charlie Shicken's fingers . . NeeahhahaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaaaa! Be there, we'll be waiting for you!!

Catto, the great feline thinker, ponders . . ."Is atheism a non-prophet organization?"

It's been great seeing so many new faces at The Cat this year. And of course, it's always a joy to welcome our repeat visitors. You make our days bright and wonderful and we appreciate each and every one of you.

Until next week then, remember -- never, I repeat never, fall in a glass grinding machine. You might make a spectacle of yourself.

Peace, love and all things feline, Linda

November 26 - Lisa Schwartz - Ragtime and Christmas Carols.

It's worth the trip to Paxico just for the pie: buttermilk-pecan.

the "cat porch" at the Electric Cat Cafe.

Mill Creek Antiques occupies most of the building in view. Seven antique stores in Paxico draw big crowds on weekends. Travelers pull off of I-70 or come from the region to shop.

About two miles away, is the Cathedral of the
Flint Hills. Its twin spires can be seen for miles.
See photos of the church at Newbury.
